Network to Give…

Filed under: Networking — Larry James @ 8:30 am

Not getting the business referrals you need?

When I speak to networking groups, at the the Q & A part of my talk, I almost always get a question that goes like this: “What can I do to get more business referrals?” I then asked, “On an average, how many business referrals do you bring to other members in your group each week?”

I am rarely surprised to hear that the answer if often “one” and if I’m lucky, “two,” most usually the answer is ZERO.

NETlook4ReferralsUnfulfilled expectations always cause problems. If you are coming to your weekly meeting and expecting to receive business referrals you will most likely be disappointed. Disappointment leads to frustration, resentment, anger and more. A better suggestion is to focus all your energy on looking for business referrals for others in your group. Focus on helping and being kind to others.

Ivan Misner once said, “Were you planning to ask your network member for advice? Before you ask for something, give something. It’s important to build some social capital with the people in your network before you start asking for favors. Seeking help from people before you’ve given anything is a little like trying to get a withdrawal from your banking account without having put anything in first.”

Bingo!

Think giving, not taking! Networking works best when you participate as a giver, not a taker!

And so it is with your relationships, you have to first make deposits before you can make any withdrawals – you have to give before you take.

Your network can do incredible things for you, but you can also do incredible things for your network. By spending some of your time tracking down business referrals for others in your group, you build that social capital that is needed before you can ever expect to received referrals. It’s really simple. Those who give… get!

Take any opportunity to connect the people in your network and do it without expecting anything in return. You will be amazed by the abundance that comes back to you. Give to your networkers, and you will be given valuable pieces of information and ideas, but also personal tips, moral support, and any other kind of help. Giving without demanding or even expecting anything in return is in fact the only way to benefit from a network. Helping others gives you a tremendous amount of personal satisfaction.

The right to the power, influence and opportunities that networking provides is not a right you possess or take: It is a right other networkers will grant you.

You cannot be a successful networker without accepting the fact that networking only works when you are totally committed to helping each other. It’s called… Reciprocity!

Do You Have ‘Cliques’ in Your Networking Group?

Filed under: Relationships — Larry James @ 7:30 am
Tags: ,

Ivan Misner, Guest Author

As you take a look at the networking groups you may be participating in, think about the relationships you have formed with the individual members. Do you have strong relationships with a select few, but disconnected and detached from others?

NETcliquesIt’s time to get serious about developing stronger relationships with each and every member of the networking groups you participate in. This includes people who you don’t think have the contacts you might want or perhaps are in a business that’s not exactly symbiotic with yours.

Have you ever thought to do one-on-ones with those people as well? Spend the time to do one-on-ones with each and every active member of your network – it helps you develop a longer and stronger network.

Larry’s NOTE: It’s very easy for cliques to form in networking groups. A clique is a small group of people, with shared interests or other features in common, who spend time together and do not readily allow others to join them.

A clique does serve networking groups well. It’s important to have good relationships with everyone in your group. As Ivan said, “This includes people who you don’t think have the contacts you might want or perhaps are in a business that’s not exactly symbiotic with yours.” Guess what? Networking is not only about getting leads for yourself. When you put “helping others” before getting referrals for yourself, you can more easily work the entire group. That will open up other possibilities. Those people you have been avoiding may know others that you need to know or can help.

If you see a clique forming in your group, do anything you can to break it up. Encourage networkers to sit with someone they don’t know very well. Encourage those in your group to have one-on-ones and report about it the following week. cliques are never a good thing when it comes to networking.

The People Factor

Filed under: Networking — Larry James @ 7:30 am

Donna Fisher, Guest Author

People tend to think networking is about results. Yet, it’s really all about people. With the support of your network, you can create miraculous and wonderful results and accomplishments in your life. Yet the foundation of networking is people helping people. It’s the people factor.

NETpeopelFactorWherever there is a problem or challenge, when you bring people who want to help into the situation, the people factor will go to work to create an effective win-win solution. Your people power lies in your ability to connect with, relate to and be a source of inspiration, action and influence to the people that you come in contact with. The power of people coming together for a common good is tremendous.

There’s nothing unusual or difficult about networking. It is pure and simple about people being friendly, considerate and helpful. People who like one another tend to become friends and as friends they tend to be supportive, helpful and encouraging.

Your network is working when people are staying connected, being supportive, sharing information and ideas and expressing their care and concern for one another. People hang out with people they like. People tend to do business with people they like.

Building good relationships makes good business sense. Anyone who has made it big can tell you there are a lot of people who helped them along the way. Rather than having to do and learn everything on your own, your network allows you to leverage your actions and ideas. Leveraging obviously allows you to attain greater results in a shorter amount of time and/or with less effort.

Awareness ~ Awareness is a critical part of effective networking. You must be aware of your network or you will miss opportunities for yourself and others. Awareness means being in touch with reality and the world around you.

Awareness is always the first step to learning and growing. You must become aware of something in order to initiate a new way of relating. You must be open to learning something you didn’t already know. You must realize there is more to learn. And networking is a process of always learning. If you think you already know everything there is to know, then there is no opening for new information.

Be aware of:

• The network that you already have.
• The strengths, skills, information, contacts and expertise that you have to offer others.
• What the people in your network want and need.
• The vast and unlimited nature of your network.
• The way you relate to yourself and the people in your life.
• What people are saying.
• What you are saying and how you are either creating connection or distance.
• What you are thinking and not saying, that if you were saying it, it could be generating opportunities.
• The power and opportunity that your network provides to you.
• The willingness and desire of others to contribute to you.
• How networking can be an easy, natural part of your life.
• How networking is an accepted and expected way of relating and doing business.
• That everything you could possible want or need is available and right around you…it’s yours for the asking!

Opportunities are all around you and yet if you are not aware of them, it seems as if they do not exist. Your awareness determines your reality and your experience. As your awareness expands, your world expands.
