“Just Makin’ Some New Friends…”

I was at a large networking event recently and someone walked over to me and said, “How are you doing?”

I surprised her by saying, “I’m really glad you asked because it makes me aware of how grateful I am to have the life I have, to be in good health and feeling terrific, and you?”

NETmakinFRIENDSShe smiled and said, “Me too.” We talked for about four minutes before she asked, “What do you do.”

The magic happened when we both showed a “genuine” interest in each other – not necessarily talking about what we do, but just getting to know each other… makin’ a new friend.

Remember the song: “Getting to know you, getting to know all about you…”?

I now have a new friend to add to my network of support. It was a connection at first sight.

While my response to her question may have invoked an interest, the four minutes we spent in “small talk” was the key. I was relieved to talk with someone who without knowing what I did for a living was interested in just making conversation.

“The fundamental element that defines the quality of your life is the people you surround yourself with and the conversations you have with them.” ~ Landmark Education

The “follow-up” was a nice quiet lunch where we talked about our businesses, ways to help each other and then a tour of her offices. ✔︎ Are you taking notes?

Networking success doesn’t depend on talent or hard work alone. It also depends on how we interact with people.

That, my friends, is today’s Networking Lesson!
