How To Win People Over Without Manipulation

Marie Forleo on “MarieTV” interviews my good friend, Bob Burg, a well known speaker, writer and consultant, about his book, “Adversaries into Allies.” They talk about 5 ways to turn adversaries into powerful allies – no manipulation needed.

AdversariesIntoAllies

Click book for info

In this interview, Bob talks about how business people focus too much of themselves instead of other people, how to start controlling your emotions in business situations, how to engage with people who have different person beliefs and more.

Many people tend to think about competitors as enemies or adversaries. According to Bob Burg it’s more useful and practical to visualize competitors as your allies.

“From time to time there may be situations where a customer would be better served by buying from a competitor than from you,” Burg explains. “If your true goal is to help your customers, that competitor just becomes another way you can be of service.”

Networkers may want to listen to the part about persuasion vs. manipulation. I find, much too often, networkers who tend to manipulate others to buy their goods or services. Some have not yet learned that manipulation doesn’t work. They often close doors that, with a little tact, could have opened up incredible opportunities. It’s much better to learn how to influence and persuade.

While this approach [manipulation] might at times bring us short-term results, it leaves people with a bad feeling about themselves and about us. At that point, our relationship with the person is weakened and our influence dramatically decreased. I particularly like with Bob talks about how you view adversaries — are they really your adversary? There is a better way!

The video is a 31 minute program. If you don’t have time to listen now, bookmark this page and come back when you can really listen. I’ve known Bob Burg for many years. He and I share an great interest in teaching and training the higher principles of business networking. Bob is also the coauthor of The Go-Giver, Go-Givers Sell More, It’s Not About You and (one of my favorites) Endless Referrals. As a networker, all of these books belong in you business library.

Let Networking Help You Get Smart!

NetSMART

We’re all aware of the importance of networking for business referrals, but how much of your time and energy do you focus on networking for knowledge?

Specifically, are you developing networks to tell you what your clients and your prospects are thinking, what their challenges are and what you need to say when you’re sitting in front of them?

In Andy Lopata’s talk on networking strategy in Iran earlier this year he talked about the importance of connecting to learn as well as working on building long-term business relationships.

Networking is. . . using your creative talents to help others achieve their goals as you cultivate a network of people strategically positioned to support you in your goals. . . expecting nothing in return! ~ Larry James

Why Attending Networking Events Won’t Change Your Business Overnight

Know how much time you can commit to networking without burning yourself out or letting your business suffer. Don’t forget to factor in the time spent following up. Then prioritise the most important actions.

Networking may seem time consuming at first but, if you approach it in the right way, your network can potentially save you a great deal of time and money in the long run.

Your Words and Thoughts Have Physical Power – Will Smith

In life many people wonder why things don’t always go the way they want them to but do not realize that in every thought they think and words they speak starts the physical formation of what begins to appears in our lives. It is normal to have negative thoughts from time to time because we do not live in a perfect world.

Or Do We?

The key is when a thought like that shows up you just need to make the decision wether or not you want to entertain that though for a long time or if you want to change the path to a better one immediately. This is where skill comes in to play. With all things you must practice to make perfect, all though some are borne with more talent than other, anyone can hone the skills of being discipline and beat there fears into submission.

Larry’s Note: This is true: What you think about, and speak about, is what you bring about! Networking doesn’t work very well for those who allow their fears to hold them back. Networking must be attacked with a passion to hone the skills that can make it work better. Networking is not only about networking… it must include a high degree of “personal growth!” This video is worth infinitely more than the few minutes it takes to watch it.

Why Do You Do. . . What You Do?

Filed under: Networking Tip,Networking Video — Larry James @ 7:00 am

I’m sure that everyone has had that moment when you have to stop and ask yourself:

“Why do I do what I do?”

3D Character and Question MarkWe ask ourselves things like this when we have moments when we feel frustration, anxiety and __(fill in the blank)__ about our life’s work.

Face it. There are times when a customer or client pushes us to the limit or perhaps our boss is beginining to get on your case. Maybe you are going through a dry spell. Business isn’t quite as good as it was and you begin to question wheither you have been doing everything you can to live up to your responsibilities to your business.

Maybe your relationship at home isn’t working so well. (Perhaps a relationship “tune-up” might help.) Have you ever noticed that your personal realtionships color your business relationships? Novus Card Services (the Discover Card people) hired me several years ago to present two relationship seminars at their regional office in Phoenix designed to help their people have better “personal” relationships at home. Very smart HR leader. The seminars were voluntary and they had record attendance at both seminars.

One of the key elements of successful business networking is to know why you do what you do and what you have to do to get to where you want to go; goal-wise; personally and financially. You must discover the answer to the question before you dive into the deep end of the networking pool. In other words, most activities in networking will most likely not work for you until you get to the real core of the “Why do I do what I do?” issue.

Knowing your purpose is the key! It will help you answer the question: “Why do I do what I do?”

Proceeding with intentionality, discipline and vigor doesn’t work if you don’t know why you are in the line of work you do and don’t really know why you do it.” Setting goals doesn’t work if you don’t know why you do what you do. There is really nothing to zero in on.

Doubt runs rampant. There is really no steam behind what you do. The frequency of your efforts are eratic and unchecked. Nothing seems to be going right. Everyone has business but you.

What gets – and keeps – you going? What’s your carrot? Money alone does not create the sense of fulfillment and accomplishment that many of us are seeking. In answering the questions, I’m looking for answers that tell me that you are passionate about what you do; that you absolutely in love with what you do and what you do helps you demonstrate your feeling of self-worth. If you are not fully committed to your position how can you sell someone else on the possibility of trusting you enough to refer their business leads to you and – later down the line – doing business with you?

Part of your answer should be that you do what you do because of the feeling of growing as an individual or becoming more competent, more efficient and overall a better person. Or maybe it’s the thrill of competition. It should be an intellectual challenge, one that can help you reach a state of independence.

If what you do leaves you feeling unappreciated, unfulfilled and perhaps you’ve even said privately, “I can’t stand this job!” then perhaps it’s time to make some new choices. To not do so will only keep you in the same old rut. The mind is unable to focus on the reverse of an idea.

My suggestion is that until you can honestly answer this question (and others), you may want to consider taking a sabbatical from networking. Can you understand why? If you are not totally sold on what you do, you cannot sell the concept successfully to anyone else. Therefore the success ratio of effective business networking gets flushed down the toilet.

I believe that you must continually inquire of yourself. Ask yourself this question and many others. It will help you stay on track.

A guest at one of my recent weddings told me, “What a beautiful wedding ceremony. . . the best I’ve ever heard. It is very obvious that you love what you do!” He was absolutely right and I was glad he noticed.

When you feel good about yourself (first) and what you do. . . you feel more willing to share what you know with others and in return. . . you earn their respect and trust as you begin to reap the benefits of networking.
